Where is Your Focus?
If you are feeling guilty or condemned, it is likely your focus is on yourself. I understand the tendency to be self and sin-focused, as I can be introspective while demanding much of myself. I am learning with all the Grace Gospel teachings in my library that my focus is on the wrong person! Wow, this is liberating!
Instead of focusing on ourselves (or even other people), let’s focus on Jesus.
Jesus has done it all. And as he so aptly said on the cross… “It is finished.” (John 19:30). Done. Accomplished. Irrevocable. Finished!
You Are Forgiven
If you embrace Jesus as your Savior, then your sins are all washed away. You are forgiven of all sins and you are continually cleansed by the blood. So when you think of the Father’s attitude toward you, realize that Jesus purchased this position of continual righteousness before the Father. You are always as white as snow.
But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin. (a continuous and present action). 1 John 1:17
Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow. Isaiah 1:18
Are you having a hard time forgiving yourself? Are you hard on yourself? Do you focus on your failings and struggles and sins a lot? WELL STOP! ENOUGH ALREADY! Jesus took all sins on himself at the cross. Why are you still focusing on them? The message you are sending is this – “Jesus, what you did on the cross wasn’t enough. I need to keep focusing on this sin/struggle and try to get my act together.”
Oh my. What an insult.
God doesn’t even remember these things anymore. Do you believe that?
“Their sins and lawless acts I will remember no more.” Heb 10:17
A Thankful Heart Instead
So when you are tempted to focus on yourself and punish yourself for the guilt you feel (by overeating?), remind yourself out loud, “Jesus has already taken this sin/struggle to the cross. There is no condemnation left for me (Rom 8:1). Thank You Jesus for the great price you paid so that I can live in peace and get off the self/sin-focus track! You are amazing, Jesus! Amen.”
Embrace what Jesus has done for you by faith – and stop focusing on yourself.
