Our thought patterns have a way of controlling our mood, our outlook and perspective, and our behaviors. Therefore, we are often encouraged to change the way we think, to renew our mind with more positive thoughts in order to experience a happier, peaceful life.
And yet, there is even more reason to renew your mind – it is the answer for bringing transformation. If you want to transform and grow in an area of your life, such as dropping a bad habit, embracing a new habit, changing a heart issue, etc., the answer lies first in changing what you believe.
Why? Because out of your belief systems come emotions and resulting actions. You act on what you believe. Often it is tempting to try to change your behavior (such as changing your eating in order to lose weight), but behavior modification in itself is often not that successful in bringing lasting change.
To truly change, see this biblical direction:
Do not conform to the pattern of this world,
but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test
and approve what God’s will is – his good, pleasing and perfect will. Romans 12:2 NIV
Transformation, growth, embracing new lifestyle behaviors actually begin by the renewing of your mind. When you change what you believe, your emotions and resulting actions change and you are transformed from within, not by behavior modification! This is a powerful secret for lasting change.
But what are the practical steps for actually renewing your mind? Although I have learned and taught some in the past, I recently found a resource that practically showed me how to dismantle toxic thoughts and beliefs and replace them with healthier thoughts that lead to a true life transformation! This is super exciting and super practical!
HOW to Renew Your Mind!
According to neuroscientist, Dr. Caroline Leaf, beliefs and thoughts actually become physical protein structures in your brain that appear as tree-like structures on bran scans. They are formed as you think on, dwell on, and rehearse thought patterns, both negative and positive.
Since negative, toxic thoughts are built up and strengthened by your thinking, they can also be dismantled, dissolved and replaced when you choose to think differently (renew your mind).
Dr Leaf has developed a 21 Day Detox Program that is totally on line and teaches you the steps to dismantle toxic thoughts and replace them with healthier thoughts. I love her program because it is step-by-step practical, Biblically-based, inexpensive and only requires about 10 minutes a day to work through.
I am delighted that there is someone in the Christian community who is teaching clear easy steps HOW to renew your mind!
If you struggle with your weight, it is likely you have some very negative belief systems established about yourself:
- I am fat and ugly
- I am so out of control
- I am a failure
- I am miserable; if I could only lose this weight, then I would be happy
Your transformation to a healthier version of yourself begins with replacing these toxic thoughts with kinder, more gentler ones. All of this self-judgment, self-criticism, self-hatred, etc., only makes you feel worse about yourself, often resulting in eating food to soothe your hurting soul. Eating this extra food packs on the pounds and helps create and maintain a weight problem.
If you want to lose weight permanently, begin by speaking positive statements to yourself. Dr Leaf recommends that you work on one toxic thought for 21 days, replacing it with a healthier thought or action at least 7 times a day.*
Come on! Refuse to be so critical. Replace the ugly with the good, such as: “I am fearfully and wonderfully made. God says that what He has created is good. And that’s me!” (Psalm 139:13-14).
And, guess what?! Eventually you will need less food for soothing purposes. Your behavior (eating) WILL change as a result of renewing your mind. And you will lose weight permanently!
The secret to any transformation begins by changing your thinking.
