Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.
1 Peter5:6-7 ESV
As I study the Grace Message, I am gaining a clearer understanding of scriptures such as this one from Peter. When riddled with anxiety over a real (or projected fear), we are taught to take our eyes off the circumstances and put them on Jesus, casting our concerns onto him. Sometimes this is easier said than done!
The Original Greek
The word care in the Greek means to care about, be concerned, to concern oneself. This means that God cares about you and has concerned Himself with you and the details of your life. He has a vested interest in your life and you are never alone or on your own! I love that having the Spirit inside me means that I always have him with me, in every moment of my life.
Anxieties are any anxious interest, concern, worry or care that brings disruption to the personality and the mind. Do you have any care or worry like that right now? I think we probably always have something or several somethings that would qualify! We are encouraged here to cast these concerns on Jesus.
Casting means to throw upon – with confidence. So when you cast your concerns on Jesus, faith is a key element – faith that He will indeed care for you in this difficulty! To be confident in a person means that you have full faith in their reliability. I love the picture of casting my fishing line out for a catch – with a firm arm hurling that hooked worm out into the deeper waters, confident that fish are there waiting for the tasty treat. Timidity would provide for a lousy cast.
But… there is more to this picture!
God Wants to Bless Us!
When you begin to grasp how much God loves you personally, how He wants to bless you and not judge you, how He wants you to see Him as accepting you just as you are because Jesus has gone to the cross for you, you can begin to relax in His watchful care. There are no judgments or condemnation left. God is at peace with you. Your behavior will not bring more acceptance (as that would be conditional acceptance). Just relax in yourself and in Jesus.
Your confidence in His care will grow when you begin to have faith that Jesus has already purchased your blessing! It is a done deal, finished and waiting for you.
The Role of Grace
Grace (undeserved and unmerited favor and acceptance) teaches us that as we rest in faith in the finished work, it will manifest. I had a concern a few nights ago that was preventing me falling asleep. I flipped my concern over, choosing instead to believe that the answer was already finished and waiting for me. I cast my care with confidence and then was able to sleep and this concern did NOT wake me up in the night. That’s a big change for me!
Knowing that God cares AND that the work is already finished is an awesome combination.
NOW you can really begin to relax!
You can throw the whole weight of your anxieties upon Him, for you are his personal concern. 1 Peter 5:6-7 Weymouth New Testament
