If you are like I used to be, you feel a compulsive pull to food. There are times you have this strong desire to eat, and it may even feel impossible to not eat in those times.
Is this Normal?
This compulsion to eat is not common in all people. Normally, food provides nutritional needs only and the desire to eat is related to feeling hungry. NormallyThin People* do not think of food nor are they drawn to food if they are not physically hungry. I now consider myself a NormallyThin Person as the compulsive pull to food is gone in my life.
Where does the Pull to Food come from?
Dieting: I am convinced that dieting creates an abnormal attachment to food. When you focus on an external plan and deprive yourself, the deprivation creates an obsession. It’s really bad! And the external plan encourages you to not trust your body anymore for it’s nutritional information. The more you diet, the worse it gets. Seriously, you will want to ditch dieting before you will be able to come into a normal relationship with food. Please encourage young people to never start!
Numbing: I also know that because food tastes pleasurable, some people eat to release tension. The more you do this, the more attached you become to food as a numbing agent helping you cope in life, just as in other addictions. This unhealthy attachment involved in emotional eating can become quite strong and entangled.
Inherit: I believe that you can inherit this dependence on food as well. If you see parents and grandparents in your life who are overeating and overweight, it is possible you inherited the tendency from them. Strongholds are passed down through the family line.
Habit: You may simply have developed a habit of overeating, maybe beginning with the house rule of having to clean your plate. This habit grows over time and becomes ingrained. Eating large quantities becomes your norm. Habits become… habitual! And can be hard to break.
There are other factors that create a pull to food, but these above are the bigger ones.
There IS an Answer!
You don’t have to continue the rest of your life with a strong compulsive pull to food that is exhausting! You can escape this misery – I know from personal experience! Because the Lord wants to be intimately involved in your life, He has and is the answer. He doesn’t want you to stay imprisoned.
There are general eating guidelines to help restore you to normal eating according to your body’s information again, which results in gradual weight loss that stays off. And the Lord can also provide you healing from the emotional attachment to food as you believe in and seek Him for a breakthrough.
God loves you so much that He hears your heart’s cry.
