Jesus Lives in You!
God’s plan is to make known his secret to his people, this rich and glorious secret which he has for all peoples. And the secret is that Christ is in you.
Colossians 1:27 GNB
This morning I picked up a book from my bookshelf that I read nearly 10 years ago which has powerfully shaped my Christian walk: The Temple Within, by Milt Rodridguez1. I love this book – because it was here that I learned and saturated in the secret truth described in the scripture above – that the presence of Jesus lives within me! Here I learned that I am His temple, I take him where ever I go, and that I am NEVER alone or apart from His Presence. This is a rich and glorious secret that is is so comforting to me.
An excerpt from the book I am writing:
What does scripture have to say about your body? As a Jesus-follower, your body is referred to as the temple of the Holy Spirit. The temple is a dwelling place, a place that God inhabits, a place of worship. It is rooted in a word that means “to dwell.” 2 Often we think that God dwells within church builders, but in this present New Covenant age, rather than dwelling in buildings, He actually dwells within the bodies of Jesus-followers, by filling us with His Spirit. We are walking temples of God bringing the Spirit of Jesus with us where ever we go! The place where God meets with us is inside our spirits.3 How awesome is that?!
Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.
1 Cor 6:19-20
Here we see also that this body temple was purchased at a great price, the price of Jesus’ shed blood. We are called to respect this body temple and honor God with it. We have a responsibility to take good care of this habitation place, this dwelling place, this place of worship.
To honor God by caring for our bodies is a privilege and we can do this by eating well, losing and maintaining weight loss, regaining health, being careful of what we put into our bodies, developing a regular sleep and relaxation schedule, reducing as much stress as possible, regular medical visits, and consistently exercising. These are good stewardship steps to embrace in order to take good care of what has been entrusted to us.
The Lord Loves to Help You!
If you are confused how to take better care of your body, God’s Temple, than simply ask Him for direction! Turn to Him within your spirit, thanking Him for His Presence there, asking for direction and strength. Here is a prayer from the end of this book chapter:
Thank you for my body which I offer to You right now, recognizing this is your temple and that You reside here by the presence of your Holy Spirit. I want to honor you with my body, learning how to take better care of my health while I learn to live by my new nature and express Your love to the world. I am so blessed that You are here with me on this journey! I want to be a better caretaker of this temple but I humbly admit that apart from You, this may be hard or even impossible. Please do in me what I am unable to do myself. Empower me, encourage me, inspire me, and may I encounter your love in the process, as I lean on you to take better care of this temple. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
