A sentence popped out at me one day this week while reading my daily devotional by Joseph Prince, Destined to Reign Devotional.
“God wants you to know that you will not be shaken when you put your faith in Jesus’ blood… Jesus’ blood cries out forgiveness for our sins, healing for our bodies, and peace and soundness for our minds.”
A Disturbed Mind
My mind is usually very active! Maybe you can relate? As a person who wants things to run smoothly, I find that I am quite the problem solver. Well, I have discovered that constantly thinking about a difficult situation in order to find a solution might sound like a good plan, but it can actually lead to depression . My intentions might be good, but this ruminating on something negative to find a solution is detrimental to my mind health and peace.
Ringing in the Ears
I have been struggling with heightened ringing in my ears for the past 3 months, which I find to be quite disturbing – so much so that I have been to an audiologist for help and have asked for healing prayer frequently. My usual disturbed mind is even more disturbed now.
The Way Out!
I have been working on restoring soundness to my mind. I remind myself that scripture tells me that I have the mind of Christ (1 Cor 2:16). I put my hand on my head and speak soundness over my mind daily. I bring my attention back to the fact as God’s child, I am never alone as the Spirit of Jesus lives in me. I remind myself that my role is to be one of dependence – trusting My Heavenly Father to take care of me and the details of my life rather than for me to be the problem solver and fixer!
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition,
with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Phil 4:6-7 NIV
We now sleep with a fan for white noise and I play quiet music in the background to help with the tinnitus ringing during the day. I apply some strategies recommended by the audiologist and my husband prays for me each night that I might get a good night’s sleep!
Soundness of Mind
I believe this is God’s desire for us – an uninterrupted, untroubled and undisturbed mind. Would you like to join me in this journey toward a more peaceful mind?
It is interesting to note that a google search for “soundness of mind” brought up the Hebrew word, shalom, which means completeness, soundness, welfare, peace and peacefulness. So soundness of mind and peace go together, like hand and glove.
I speak “Shalom” over your mind, over my mind! May we find peace together. Please comment below if you would like to join me in the search for soundness of mind or if you have ideas to suggest!
(I also include this as part of my short video series called Celebrate You! Check this out if you would like more suggestions on this topic!)
You (God) keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you. Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord God is an everlasting rock.
