A hummingbird finds nectar in my iPhone?? Well – not exactly!
While texting a friend with my new iPhone on our dock, I was visited by a beautiful hummingbird! We have a hummingbird feeder on the porch at camp which supplies them with sweet liquid nourishment. They are also drawn to the flowers around the camp that provide them with sweet, natural nectar. I love watching these incredible creatures and have even been standing on the porch once when five of them were buzzing and dive bombing near my head!
But for a couple of days in a row this summer, I was out sitting on the dock when one came up very close to visit, hovering right near my body! Ah, what a delight! I am now thinking it was the eggplant purple case on my iPhone which drew its attention. On the second day’s visit, I was in for an especially rare treat – the hummingbird literally came up to my iPhone while I was texting and inserted its beak into the earphone jack of my phone, looking for nectar!!
It was a very quick encounter as the bird soon realized there was no nectar to be found in my iPhone! But what a treat that experience was for me! It was priceless. (I wish I had a picture!)
And of course I find a real spiritual analogy in this experience. Where are we too trying to find nourishment where none is to be found??
Are you trying to feed your empty heart out of a well that has nothing substantial to offer? What is that empty well? It could be anything from tv to shopping to drugs to people to… ah… FOOD.
Does eating extra food really nourish you in the way you are looking for? Of course not! It’s an empty well that only causes more heartache. I am glad that the hummingbird didn’t persist in trying to get nectar from my iPhone as it could have done some damage to its beak! Trying to feed ourselves from False Sources only hurts us in the long run.
And like my eggplant purple case, how is food packaged that is drawing your attention? Is it speaking promises to you of fulfillment, joy, happiness, comfort? Remember that these are lies from the enemy of your soul. Food feeds your body only. Period. It is a wonderful nourishment for that. This is its purpose. Period.
The real question is, “Are you trying to feed your stomach or your heart with all this food?” Unfortunately, feeding your heart with food only causes you to be more hungry emotionally and spiritually. You must find a source that feeds you in a way that truly nourishes your heart. And of course, the Lord is the best source! Jesus calls himself the Bread of Life. May I encourage you to take some alone time today, meeting with Him in a way that feeds your starving heart. Put on some quiet music, read some scripture, close your eyes and meditate on Him. Pull away from the hectic-ness of life and feed your poor hungry heart.
Jesus is the Real Flower of Nourishment for your soul!
I find that failing to feed my heart from the Bread of Life leaves me wanting and empty. But when I connect with the Lord, I am in a better space emotionally. It really makes a difference for me – just like the hummingbird finding nectar in a flower or liquid bird feed in a feeder. Drinking from the source fills me. And I need to go there often, just as the hummingbird keeps coming back for more, over and over every day.
