I have been watching the show, Extreme Weight Loss, with Christ Powell for several weeks in a row. I really admire Chris’ compassion for and belief in his clients. I usually tear up a bit as I watch the show because of the emotional pain experienced by the weight loss candidates he has chosen to work with.
Lack of Self Worth
The incredible low self-worth by these clients is very real and very disturbing. Devastating events in their childhood combined with carrying excess weight from overeating to feed the pain often results in these people hating themselves and their bodies.
Self-hatred with no sense of worth is a common painful experience for those grossly overweight.
We are each created as a unique creation of God – a unique expression of His nature to the world, but events and fat can rob a person of realizing their worth entirely.
1. On a scale of 0-5, how worthy do you feel?
Feeding the Pain
Many people “feed their pain” with excess food. It is their coping mechanism to deal with trauma.
The rejection of having been given up for adoption was a particular driving force of lack of worth for one woman. She turned to food to deal with the rejection pain. Wanting to meet her mother inspired her to lose weight.
Having lost her dad at a young age and being raised by a critical mom created a huge void in one woman’s life, resulting in emotionally eating a lot of food to fill the hole of lack of love.
2. Can you identify the source of your overeating? What purpose does your excessive eating provide? Are you feeding some inner emotional pain with food? (You may want to seek help to deal with letting go of this emotional pain).
Overeating is often not just an oversight; it most often serves a purpose.
Put Your Self-Care First
Interestingly, in the nursing profession, those who know and understand the importance of health, there are many overweight people. I think this may because they take care of everyone else with little left to care for themselves.
In order to become healthier, you MUST see that you are worth investing the time and energy into this. It takes work and daily choices to lose weight and become fit.
3. How can you make self-care a top priority in your own life?
Transformation Feels Good!
In the Extreme Weight Loss show, the journey of weight loss and increased exercise while letting go of emotional and physical baggage is a journey of discovering the valuable person of worth. I love to watch the transformation as these worthless feeling, overweight clients work very hard over a year’s time to become confident, full of hope, and full of self-love people. Wow, it is absolutely amazing!
4. How would transformation of health feel to you?
