As I was reading the Christmas story this week in Luke, I was impressed to again see the difference between Zechariah and Mary’s responses to the word of the Lord delivered to them by the angel, Gabriel.
Zechariah doubted and asked for confirmation. This led to him being silenced, mute, until the birth of his son, John the Baptist. Mary believed the word of the Lord about her carrying and birthing the Messiah, and it resulted in blessings, happiness and peace!
Mary’s response in Luke 1:38,
“Let it be to me according to your word.”
Elizabeth’s word about her in Luke 1:45,
And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord.
The Greek word for blessed here is makarios, meaning happy, blessed, favored, fortunate, privileged.
A Different Response!
Each was given a word from the Lord, but then each had a very different experience resulting from their response to the word. Zechariah doubted, wanting proof, and had to deal with an inability to communicate for months. Mary believed and was filled with happiness and blessings.
Faith (before seeing) releases good things into our lives. I, for one, want this kind of peace in my life. I am working at developing faith in a specific area of my life. I am reading and proclaiming God’s word over this situation each morning. I am working toward trusting the Lord in this area and stirring up my faith in my morning devotions.
Whose response do you most resemble?
Do you have faith for your improved health, deliverance from an eating stronghold or any other issue in your life? Or are you more like Zechariah, asking for proof, not trusting God to work out His plan and His word for your life, but filled with doubt instead?
Start here: Do you have a word from the Lord concerning this issue? This is a GREAT place to begin – ask God for a personal word or a scripture and write down what He shows you. Begin to read this word daily, speaking a word of trust that He is the One who will complete it in your life.
And also ask for direction – is He asking you to DO anything? Or is He asking you to simply REST while He does the work? Each situation is different and needs specific direction!
I was so blessed to read this scripture earlier this week, feeling it was a word to me to rest in my particular situation,
The Lord provides for those he loves while they are asleep. Psalm 27:2 GNB
The Proper Time
God’s word and promise is a sure thing, but it does have a proper timing! Don’t give up, but hang in there until you see the breakthrough!
And now you (Zechariah) will be silent . . . because you did not believe my words, which will come true at their proper time.
